WHAT IS MODERN?
The mid-century Modern movement both departed radically from previous design periods and incorporated various elements of those same periods. New materials such as plastics and synthetic foams allowed designers to create previously impossible shapes, reflecting the Space Age attitude of the latter half of the 20th century. At the same time, Modern paid homage to its predecessors, Art Deco and Arts & Crafts, blending and updating their lines. Assembly-line construction in the 1930s and 1940s had resulted in bland, uninspired designs. In fact, the reduced proportions and clean lines that define the Modern look were reactions to the bloated furniture of the World War II era. Modern returned the designer to the central role in the process, hearkening back to the Bedermeier philosophy of the mid-19th century and the Asian traditions that emphasized impeccable materials and skilled craftwork.
